New directory maps independent shops in all 50 states and DC, with 23 “trails” tracing the donut from Cambodian Los Angeles to a Swiss village in West Virginia

Family shops frying since 1908, Cambodian-run counters in LA, oliebollen in Holland, Michigan. The donut is one of the most multicultural foods in America, and we’re showing that in one place.”

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, October 13, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Less than two weeks after launch, Glazed and Amused (glazedandamused.food) has mapped more than 2,000 independent donut shops across all 50 states and Washington, DC, spotlighting the local bakeries and cultural traditions behind America’s donuts. The site now covers 2,051 independently owned shops across 2,592 locations, and has grown its collection of donut trails to 23.

The directory lists only independent shops. No franchises, no chains, no private-equity owners. Before a site goes live, the team cross-checks every listing against published sources and the shop’s own website, and owners can claim and verify their own pages.

“Most of what’s online about donuts is either a chain’s store locator or a listicle somebody wrote as clickbait,” said Craig Bowman, the Washington, DC consultant who built the site. “I wanted the other thing: a map of the family shops that have been frying since 1908, the Cambodian-run counters that defined Los Angeles, the bakery in Holland, Michigan that still makes oliebollen on New Year’s Eve. The donut is one of the most multicultural foods in America, and we’re showing that in one place”

Trails, Not Just Listings

The site’s donut trails are short, sourced stories built around a theme, each one ending in a map and a set of shops. Five new ones went live this week, all with a cultural thread:

– The Mochi Wave, tracing the chewy Japanese pon de ring from Honolulu to Portland, Phoenix, and an unlikely cluster of three shops in Iowa.
– Donas, the Mexican-American donut shop, where conchas sit next to glazed, and the cold brew is horchata.
– Zeppole and St. Joseph’s Day, the Italian doughnut that Rhode Island and Philadelphia bakeries make once a year.
– Oliebollen, the Dutch New Year’s doughnut that Washington Irving called the olykoek, and the Dutch-American towns that kept it.
– The Fastnacht Line, German immigrant bakeries from Philadelphia through Maryland, West Virginia, and Ohio to Louisville.

They join earlier trails on Cambodian refugee families and the pink box, Pączki Day, Malasada Day, Hanukkah sufganiyot, Texas kolaches, Louisiana beignets, Amish bake days, Native frybread, and Pennsylvania Dutch fastnachts, along with drivable routes like the Butler County Donut Trail in Ohio and the surviving giant rooftop donuts of Los Angeles.

By the Numbers

– 2,051 independent shops, 2,592 locations, 50 states plus DC
– Most shops: California (320), Texas (172), Florida (78), Ohio (77), Washington (73)
– 11 shops that have been open since before 1927; the oldest since 1908
– 23 trails
